6 Fossils

they can hunt on public land legally or on private land with
permission. Various state and federal laws determine the kind
of fossils that can be hunted on public lands and the tech-
niques that can be used. For example, the surface collecting of
invertebrate fossils may be allowed, whereas hunting and exca-
vating vertebrate bones is nearly always restricted to profes-
sionals with special permits. It is important to know and obey
these laws and get any required permission when hunting on
private land.
Club membership may spark a lifelong interest in fossils
and the earth sciences. Picking up individual fossils can be fun,
