chapter 6

                  Are You Credible?

                  It’s a shame when people can’t
                  communicate. When they’re managers
in your company, it’s a catastrophe.
                                                    —Fortune

t may be all about you. If people don’t think you’re per-
sonally credible, your message won’t matter. And any-
Ibody who hides behind the computer all day and
communicates primarily through e-mail or a Web site will
be at a distinct disadvantage in building credibility.
Generally, five things either contribute or detract from
        people’s inclination to believe you:

The Look—your appearance and physical presence
such as dress, grooming, body language
The Language—the words you choose and how well
you think on your feet to express yourself
The Likeability Factor—your personality and the
chemistry you create between yourself and others
             Character—your values and integrity
Competence—your skill and track record of results
