             Five-Step Process Used for Data Center Energy Efficiency
                As indicated in Figure 2.1, the five-step process is to diagnose, man-
             age and measure, use energy-efficient cooling, virtualize, and build new
             or upgrade facilities when feasible.

                Diagnose the Opportunities and Problems
                This step is to perform a data-center energy-efficiency assessment.
             Many data center energy consultants bring in tools such as Mobile
             Measurement Technology (MMT) to look at “hot spots” in the data cen-
             ter and areas where cold and hot air mix too early and thereby waste
             energy. The assessment should include a list of unused IT equipment
             that can be turned off. In addition, the diagnostic phase can help
             encourage organizations to retire unused software applications and focus
             on adopting more effective software that requires fewer CPU cycles. A
             typical x86 server consumes between 30 percent and 40 percent of its
