12 and 11 recalls, respectively, and in 2009 only 9. It was the
number of vehicles involved that made the big splash in the head-
lines. Before 2009, Toyota was relatively low (but was never the
lowest, nor did it claim to be) in both number of recalls and ve-
hicles recalled compared to other automakers when we adjust for
the size of the company.
For Toyota, both the number of recalls and the number of ve-
hicles recalled rose quite dramatically between 2009 and 2010—
from 9 to 17 recalls and from 4.9 million to 6.7 million vehicles.
