ABOUT THE AUTHOR












               Toby Darling was educated at The Pilgrim’s School and Winchester
            College before gaining a scholarship to Wadham College, Oxford, where
            he graduated with a degree in physics in 1982. He immediately joined
            Shell International Petroleum Maatschappij (SIPM). After initial training
            in The Hague, he was posted to Thai Shell from 1983 to 1984, working
            as a wellsite petroleum engineer. In 1984 he was posted to SIPM in The
            Hague, working on secondment to the Exploration seismic group; in 1986
            he transferred to the Shell Research Laboratories (KSEPL), where he
            worked on a number of novel logging techniques, including the develop-
            ment of LWD tools. In 1989 he was seconded to Petronas Carigali Sdn
            Bhd in Miri, Malaysia, where he worked as an operational petrophysicist
            in the Baram Delta region. In 1992, he moved to Shell Expro in Aberdeen,
            working as a petrophysicist and team leader for a number of North Sea
            fields. In 1997 he transferred to Shell Expro’s exploration department in
            London, where he worked until 1999 before leaving Shell to form his own
            consultancy. Since 1999 he has worked as a consultant to a number of oil
            companies, most recently on contract to BAPETCO in Cairo. He is
            married with two sons.
