                  During  its formative  phase,  British  cultural studies  was  deeply
            influenced  by the  New  Left.  Indeed, the formation and development  of
              the  New  Left  is seen  by  many  historians  as a precursor  to  cultural
            studies. The  New  Left  emerged  as a British  response  to the  Russian
                                                invasion  of  Hungary  in 1956.
