Cultural studies crossed the Atlantic in the mid-1980s, a period when
the humanities as a whole were in some turmoil and undergoing a
sociological transformation in the United States. Many disciplines
were moving towards a more active engagement with the politics of
social identity and an examination of the representations of cultural
forms.
