There had to be a
reaction from the
defenders of science.
Constructivists,
deconstructionists,
feminists, any sort of
-ists who reflected
critically on science,
were lumped together
as the enemy in the
counter-attacks led
by Paul Gross and
Norman Leavitt in
their Higher
Superstition: The
Academic Left and
Its Quarrels with
Science (1994). Such
a shotgun approach
could not have a
sharp focus. But this
was eventually
supplied by a
physicist. Alan D.
Sokal published a
famous hoax paper in
the respectable
journal Social Text
(1996). Sokal
pretended to write
about quantum
gravity but made
absurd claims, gave
wrong facts and
misrepresented
theories, appropriated science, and
arguments from a worked on the wrapped his entire
whole plethora of sociology and paper in the jargon of
writers who have. cultural studies of cultural studies.
