LEADERSHIP SECRETS OF HILLARY CLINTON



           • Find a common ground for people with diverse back-
             grounds and interests by identifying common values,
             goals, aspirations, and dreams.
           • Focus on the future in terms of what can and will be
             accomplished.
           • Let people know that you understand their fears and
             concerns, but convey empowering optimism to encour-
             age thinking about the possibilities.
           • Use a variety of modes of expression (metaphors, sto-
             ries, pictures, and so on) to make your message come
             alive.
           • Speak positively and with confidence about the
             power of people and mutual aspirations. For example,
             replace “we will try” with “we will” and “we are.”

        When we looked at authenticity, I addressed the impor-
        tance of being emotionally expressive and sharing your true
        self with others. There is also a time and place to speak
        from your heart when you are leading people through times
        of change or challenging situations and you want them to
        feel personally connected to you and to your message.
           One way to do this is to acknowledge the current situa-
        tion, citing specific examples that demonstrate that you
        have listened to the people you are communicating with,
