        lenges and have hope for the future. This is what I mean
        when I say to speak from your heart. Hillary expressed her
        personal feelings and was speaking from a human and
        emotional perspective rather than giving facts and speak-
        ing more rationally.
           To summarize how to speak from the heart when you
        want to have others connect with your message, here are
        the three steps: (1) demonstrate that you understand what
        people are saying and how they are feeling, (2) show that
        you care and are committed to making a difference by shar-
        ing on a personal level, and then (3) move from emotion to
        inspiration. It might sound complicated at first, but once
        you begin to use this approach, it will become intuitive.
        And, your communication will be awesome.



              x SECRET 3: ADAPT YOUR STYLE z

        As we mature as leaders, we have a host of different
        experiences that eventually help us home in on certain
        leadership approaches that seem to naturally work best
        for us. We call these approaches a preferred leadership
        style. For some of us, it is being more directive in our
        management style. For others, it is being more collabo-
        rative, or more of a visionary, and so on. In Carl Bern-
        stein’s book A Woman in Charge, he describes Hillary’s
        leadership style as one that creates a nurturing culture of
        collegiality and loyalty that is based on teamwork, a style
