family and her boss, that she needed to do a better job of
quantifying her accomplishments on her résumé. Her boss
suggested several people in the company with whom she
could do informational interviews to learn more about
outside organizations, clients, and partners that she could
connect with and explore potential job opportunities.
This is what controlling your response looks like in action.
The second part of this secret is just as important as the
first. Putting a plan together gives us back some control of
the situation. It moves us in the direction of action, and
action begins to shift the circumstances. Action creates
energy, and energy promotes resiliency. Whether you pick
up the phone and schedule a lunch with someone or decide
to go back to school, designing a plan to help you reach
your ultimate goals, even if you are starting with baby steps,
is moving in the right direction.
x SECRET 3: EMBRACE CHANGE z
The one thing that is constant in life is change. We all
know that, but change is still difficult for us. It often pres-
ents a threat or involves an uncomfortable adjustment. And
resiliency is about overcoming disruptive change—the kind
of change that is more difficult than what we normally
expect. Having coached many successful leaders, it’s clear
to me that what differentiates them from ineffective leaders
today is their ability to accept and adapt to change. They
