LEADERSHIP SECRETS OF HILLARY CLINTON
surprised to get a number of calls from friends and col-
leagues saying that they were concerned about my well-
being and whether I could be successful in running my own
organization. While I knew that this was going to be a
stretch for me, I also knew that my passion and core
strengths were in the leadership development area, and I
had always had a burning desire to engage my entrepre-
neurial spirit. I worked very hard the first year, doing almost
everything—from administrative duties to marketing to
delivery of the work. I decided that it would also be good
for me to get my master’s degree in the field of leadership
development, so I worked and went to school at the same
time. I did focus groups in the local business community
and with some of our existing clients to learn from them
what was important and a priority in terms of leadership
and human capital development and what they would value
the most. From there, SHAMBAUGH created an inte-
grated model for developing leaders that still exists today.
I learned through that process that you can do almost
anything that you want to do. It starts with a mindset
that you believe in yourself, self-accountability. You work
hard to learn the ropes, build a supportive network of
people around you, and do not waver from your core
strengths, value proposition, and brand. Now, 18 years later,
SHAMBAUGH is a global leadership and executive
development organization that reaches and works with
thousands of leaders across the globe.
