the researchers involved for their stimulating questions and suggestions. Thanks
also to David Morgan, Reinhilde König, and Maarten Boekelo for their valuable
comments at an earlier stage of this chapter.

         2. The Acts of the Apostles (Greek Praxeis Apostolon) is the fifth book of the
New Testament. Acts narrates the story of the early Christian church, with
especial emphasis on the ministries of the 12 apostles and of Paul of Tarsus.
         3. St. Paul was himself a tent maker (Acts 18: 3). I thank David Morgan for call-
ing my attention toward this detail.
         4. In 2001 Nuno Carvalho was 27 years old and a follower PHN Generation of
Canção Nova, more on which momentarily.
         5. The Aerospace Institute of Cachoeira Paulista is a national center that among
other functions does research on atmospheric science, technical spatial engi-
neering for remote sensing in the detection, and control of geostationary satel-
lites and satellite images as well as astronomic events. The institute has in the
meantime developed a special program connected to the Rainforest (AMZ),
and with other distant places like China, and houses a highly sophisticated
monitoring system that gives images in real time of deforestation of the
Rainforest as well as pollution levels in the main urban centers of Brazil.
         6. It is worth recalling that the CCR originated out of a retreat held in February
by a group of faculty members and students in one of the headquarters of
Duquesne University, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from there spreading to
other academia; see Gabriel, Eduardo A. (2005).
         7. The Portuguese word for meio relates at once to being in the midst, to envi-
ronment (meio ambiente), and to means of communication (meio de comunica-
ção), as Michel Serres has also noted about French language; see Connor,
Steven “Michel Serre’s Milieux,” presented in conference on Mediations—
          Belo Horizonte, 23–26 July 2002. See http://www.bbk.ac.uk/english/skc/
          milieux/.

       10. In his Letters St. Paul enumerates the different charismas in terms of charis-
mas of the word, which include glossolalia, and prophecy; charismas of action,
including charity and miraculous cures; charismas of cognition, which include
the gift of knowledge, discernment, and science. Charity, however, is the cha-
risma extolled by St. Paul as the foundation for all others. Charisma shares
with charity and charm the same etymological root in charis.
       11. For example, on 30 July 2001 the balance between ins (3.332. 918, 24 Reais),
outs (2.336.393.27 Reais) ended up positive (996. 524 97 Reais). Only during
the last week of that month did the stream flow of “souls” actually accelerated.
