measured at the lines obtained when metal ions are sprayed into the flame. Provided there is no self-
absorption and the transition probabilities of the lines are known accurately, the flame temperature can
be calculated from the ratio of line intensities using the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution.
Flame temperature varies from one part of the flame to another, as indicated in Section 2.2.2. Figures
2.5 and 2.6 show this effect for a stoichiometric and a fuel-rich flame, respectively.
