Hard-Core
Morale Cases
ou know the saying—“There are two sides to every
Ystory.” Well, there are two sides to every supposed
dead-end job or hard-core morale case, too. What makes
it so tough for one employee to experience any enthusi-
asm for a so-called “less desirable” job and yet another
employee, in an almost identical job but working in a dif-
ferent atmosphere for a different manager, actually loves
his or her work and manages to be enthusiastic day in
and day out?
While I conducted dozens of interviews for this chapter, the
answer kept coming back to one common denominator—it’s all
in the way managers treat their people. And let’s face it: some
managers are the problem. They end up creating a low morale
atmosphere simply because they hold certain positions in lesser
regard and convey that attitude to the ranks, an attitude that’s
bound to rub off on the people and dilute enthusiasm over time.
