Running through the centre of the water pump is a spindle mounted on
a bearing. The bearing is prepacked with grease, and fi tted with seals for
retaining the grease and keeping the coolant in the engine. The drive pulley is
fi tted to the spindle on the outside of the pump. The movement of the impeller
assists coolant fl ow through the water jacket. Water pumps are supplied as
a replacement part fully assembled in a housing holding the bearing, spindle,
impeller and drive fl ange for the pulley ( Figs 2.165 and 2.166 ).
