                                            3.4.8  Safety systems

                                          Active safety relates to any development designed to actively avoid accidents. It
                                        can be considered under four general headings:
                             Defi nition             handling safety
                                        ●
                                                physiological safety
                                        ●
                Passive and active safety
                                        ●
      features                                  perceptual safety
        Passive safety features are used           operational safety.
                                        ●
      during an unavoidable accident.         Passive safety relates to developments that protect the occupants of the vehicle
      Active safety features work to avoid
      the accident in the fi rst place.       in the event of an accident ( Fig. 3.131   ). Air bags are a good example of this.
                                          A seat belt, seat belt tensioner and an air bag are at present the most effective
                                        restraint system in the event of a serious accident. At speeds in excess of
