          1.1 Introduction
               With the popularity of genome studies in microbes, animals, and
               plants, the potentiality of microarray technology is beginning to be
               realized. Microarrays are increasingly used to study genomewide
               changes in gene expression, genome organization, and chromatin
               structure. Using this technology, we can now classify genes based on
               their expression profiles, infer their physiological roles, and construct
               databases of genes involved in specific functions.
                   Microarrays are being used to study developmental and coordi-
               nated regulation of gene expression, gene activation, suppression
