Table 14.7— Steam Trap Maintenance
Percentage reduction in steam trap capacity The cost of steam lost through a leaking trap
in one day can exceed the cost of a new trap. If
a trap is backing up condensate and has become
waterlogged, the reduction in capacity or efficien-
cy of steam-using equipment can also waste more
money in one day than the cost of the trap.
Good inspections that pinpoint problem
traps for repair or replacement are important.
While the trap is the focus of tests and inspections,
the steam trap station and its piping and fittings
should be checked also as these things may be
contributing to trap problems. Missing strainers,
open bypass lines and condensate piping pres-
sure are a few problems that could be found.
