people who supported me during this project, especially my
husband, David, who gives me confidence and guides me back
to my purpose with his insight and love; my daughter, Autumn,
who inspires me daily with her courageous and uncompromis-
ing quest to follow her dreams; my sister, Rose Marie Trammell,
the most generous and kind-spirited person I know; and my
cousin, Theresa Kautz, whose amazing loyalty and belief in me
has never waned. Special appreciation goes to my dear friend
Traci Van, for standing by me all these years and for being my
inspiration for keeping the faith on a daily basis.
A big thank-you to my editor and friend, John Woods, head
of CWL Publishing Enterprises, to whom I’m grateful for calling
me that day in New York and inviting me to work with him on
this project—he is a person who knows how to keep an author’s
morale high. Thanks, also, to copyeditor Bob Magnan of CWL
for his helpfulness along the way, not to mention that great
sense of humor; Nancy Woods, who kept the plates spinning
and paid attention to all the details; and McGraw-Hill’s Senior
Editor, Catherine Dassopoulos, for including me in another
Briefcase Book and for always seeing the big picture.
It goes without saying that this book could not have been
written without the hundreds of people I interviewed who
demonstrate daily their unwavering commitment to creating a
more joyful, respectful, humane, esteeming, and spirit-filled
place for people to work. This especially includes the firefight-
ers, police officers, medical practitioners, clergy, and people of
New York and Washington, D.C. for sharing their heartfelt sto-
ries with me.
Finally, I would like to dedicate this book to the victims of
September 11, 2001, and to their loved ones.
