You Fit In
■ Stand tall regardless of how tall you are.
■ Slow down.
■ Stop the droopy face.
AS MUCH AS YOU NEED TO STAND OUT, YOU NEED TO FIT IN. This does
not mean that you change depending on who you’re around. No, you have
your predetermined (self-trained) style, you’re flexible, but you’re also con-
sistent. Everyone gets the same person, or else you’re a phony.
As much as this book is about differentiating yourself, it’s also about
fitting in—at least to a degree.
There is a picture we all carry around in our head of a person we
deem memorable, impressive, credible, genuine, trusted, liked, confident,
competent, comfortable, cool, calm, collected, and charismatic. Pause
and try to recall someone who fits this description. It could be a boss,
a public figure, a priest, or a character’s role on television. Likely, in your
mental portrayal, the person stands relatively straight, not hunched; is
physically calm, not jittery; has an agreeable countenance and suitable
dress; and makes you feel at ease.
