                 CHAPTER 1
                  1. Paper, wood, coatings, window, meat, bread, hair, and toothbrush.
                  2. Because polymers are important items in today’s society and are all about us present in essen-
tially all of our daily activities from food to sleeping, to clothing, and so on.
                  3. Because polymer science is relatively new, so many of the major contributors are still alive.
                  4. All are mainly polymeric except for water.
                  5. Clays, bricks, sand, glass, mica, and diamonds.
                  6. Polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyesters, nycons, and so on.
                  7. a. low-density polyethylene, b. polystyrene, and c. polyepropylene.
                  8. It takes time to optimize conditions of synthesis, scale up producing the material for commer-
cial usage, further characterization of the material, developing a market, and so on.
                  9. Lighter, do not rust, less expensive, and so on.
                 10. Much of what we wear, eat, and handle are polymeric. We are largely water and polymers with
our skin and hair being proteins and the driving force for our living include nucleic acids and
                     proteins.
                 11. There are different reasons such as the presence of a trained workforce and the proximity of the
raw materials, favorable local tax structure, and so on.
                 12. Many items, such as sneakers and tires, are a complex of materials rather being made from one
or two materials. Thus, simple codes would not be able to appropriately describe the composi-
                     tion of such complex products.
                 13. By becoming better informed; taking an active role in being involved in the many possible
ways, including informed recycling and infl uencing legislation.
