when they offer ongoing constructive, encouraging, thoughtful,
and sincere feedback every day.
The most effective supervisors take on the persona of a coach
who provides training, mentoring, and feedback “in the moment”
to his or her team members. Many great coaches have also been
great players, but the traits, skills, and characteristics that make
an individual a great coach are quite different from those that
made him or her a successful player. Like the coach of an ath-
letic team, successful supervisors have often been excellent
employees; while having such a résumé provides credibility and
practical technical support, it does not provide a background in
knowing how to give specific, actionable, and timely feedback
to employees. Like accomplished coaches, effective supervisors
know how to deliver feedback to improve the performance of
their team members. Do you pass the test of a good coach? Take
the following quiz and find out.
