                              ISO-BUTYL ALCOHOL

Iso-butyl alcohol (boiling point: 108.1 C, density: 0.8018) is of particular
interest in motor fuels because of its high octane rating, which makes it
                    desirable as a gasoline-blending agent.
This alcohol can be reacted with methanol in the presence of a catalyst
to produce methyl-t-butyl ether. Although it is currently cheaper to make
iso-butyl alcohol from iso-butene (iso-butylene), it can be synthesized
from syngas with alkali-promoted zinc oxide catalysts at temperatures
                    above 400°C (750°F).

See Iso-Butene, Oxo Reaction, Synthesis Gas.
