This book owes its inspiration to the Editorial Board of the Women in Asia Publication
Series of the Asian Studies Association of Australia. The series editor, Louise Edwards,
also a contributor to this volume, has continued to play a dynamic role in the promotion of
the studies of Chinese women and feminist scholarship in general. I am grateful to her for
her ongoing enthusiasm and assistance throughout this project.
I would also like to thank the contributors to this project, who with considerable good
will responded to various deadlines and requests to revise and proofread. Thanks go also
to Susan La Marca, of the University of Melbourne, who spent many hours in formatting
and proofreading the draft volume. Peter Sowden of RoutledgeCurzon was a prompt and
helpful correspondent and we are grateful to him for ensuring the timely completion of
            this book.
The chapter by David S.G.Goodman was first published in Asian Studies Review, vol.
26:3 (Sept. 2002), 331–53. We thank Blackwell Publishing for allowing us to reproduce
            it here.
