STEP 5: IDENTIFY YOUR PASSIONS AND VALUES 135
14.
15.
Now go back and review the top values you selected and deter-
mine the core value behind each peak experience that you just
listed. Don’t forget that everyone is unique, so while living abroad
in Spain for one year may reflect my value for travel and adven-
ture, for another person it may reflect the lure of the unknown
or the value of feeling connected. Two people can have the same
experience and value it for very different reasons.
The point is to identify those core values so that you can use
that knowledge as a guide in selecting the right career. If the
career is aligned with your values, you’ll likely find it personally
fulfilling and rewarding. If it is in conflict with your values, then
you’ll likely soon be dissatisfied, frustrated, and unhappy regard-
less of how much the job pays. Sometimes people can stay in the
wrong job for years, but then one day, they just can’t stand it any-
more, and they quit. The sooner you quit and find the career that
matches your values, the happier and more successful you’ll be!
