140 COACH YOURSELF TO A NEW CAREER
for a fulfilling and exciting life. Think about the things you can
do right now, starting today, that express your core values and
passions.
Here is an example from my life:
ACTIONS VALUE EXPRESSED
1. Keynote conference in India Travel/adventure/lead and inspire
2. Horseback riding Fun/play
3. Write a book Create/inspire
4. Meditate Balance/spirituality
5. Volunteer at a charity Contribute
When you move into alignment with your core values, won-
derful things start to happen. When you are doing what you love
to do, you’ll be enjoying yourself and feeling fully alive, and people
will notice the change. You will have more energy and be more
joyful, leading you to a more productive process as you assess your
desired career change or job transition.
Are Your Values Compatible with Your
Prospective Employer’s Values?
Once you’ve identified your own values, it makes sense to see
whether they are compatible with those of your prospective
employers—and I don’t mean the phony values that they outline
in the company report. What do they really value? Does the com-
pany have a genuine reputation for supporting working parents?
Is it really an environmentally green company, or do people there
just go through the motions and not even recycle the paper? If you
want to have a family, and the company doesn’t have any existing
examples of having supported other working parents by setting
them up to telecommute or job share or by providing excellent
day care, then you may end up quitting.
