illness or death from “the bends.” Not surprisingly, there is great interest
in developing robots that can dive down more than 300 m while doing
all, or most, of the things that human divers can do.
The ideal submarine robot employs telepresence. This is an advanced
form of remote control in which the operator has the impression of “being
                            the robot.”
Imagine a treasure-hunting expedition,in which you salvage diamonds,
emeralds, and gold coins from a sunken galleon 1000 m beneath the surface
of the sea, while sitting warm and dry in a remote-control chair. Imagine
testing shark repellants without fear. Imagine disarming a sunken warhead
at the bottom of a deep bay, or repairing a deep-sea observation station.
