EDITING FOR MOVING PICTURES
1
Take the video you shot for Exercise 1 in Chapter 8 and edit it twice.
First, edit a scene that is as short as possible but still tells the story well.
Then, reedit your video to be as long as possible without being tedious.
For example, if there is an action shot that takes 10 seconds, you could
edit it to be composed of two 5-second shots or you could use many
shots to examine the action from a variety of angles, which might take
almost 20 seconds. Work with your video to see what you can come
up with.
At this stage in the book, you have been exposed to all three compo-
nents of crafting a broadcast news package (broadcast writing, video
shooting, and video editing). Find an event you think is newsworthy and
craft a complete package that would be ready for broadcast. Remem-
ber, packages last about a minute and a half, so you’ll need both words
and video that can cover that amount of time. It’s a lot harder than it
144 looks. Shoot your video, craft your script, and then put it all together.
After you
2 are done, write a short paper that analyzes what you did.
What worked well and what could have used a little help? Spend some
time examining what you would like to improve on when you create
your next package.
