Take a story from your local or school newspaper and create a broadcast
script for a 25-second reader. Focus on the elements of good broadcast
writing: words that can be spoken well and understood by people who
only get to hear them. Craft an attention-grabbing lead, a solid body,
and a good close. Remember to follow the rules of style in terms of
numbers, symbols, and other similar style items. Read it aloud and
time yourself. Your story needs to run exactly 25 seconds.

Find 5 to 10 proper nouns from your area that you think would be
difficult for someone who doesn’t live in your area to pronounce. Then,
write broadcast-style sentences that include the nouns and pronouncers
(pronunciation guides) for each of them. Remember to follow style
rules.
