The omnivore thesis 103

spread of more omnivorous forms of culture. Thus, it is now possible to have
access to a greater range of cultural products in a reasonably straightforward
way than ever before. These may be, for example, films made by European art
house cinema directors or past series of popular TV shows, as well as 24-hour
TV. This is important, as these resources mean that there is much more avail-
able to provide the bases for audience and performance activity in ordinary
                   life.

                   Note
1 The most significant was Raymond Williams who argued that ‘There are in fact no
masses; there are only ways of seeing people as masses’ (Williams 1963: 289).
