viii Acknowledgements
My intellectual debts to Mike Savage, Alan Warde, Gaynor Bagnall and
Eamonn Carrabine go beyond the work already mentioned in many ways.
Alan’s insightful comments on the first draft of this book have helped me
refine and improve the ideas in a number of ways. In addition, the discussion
with many colleagues at seminars and conferences has had a significant input.
Finally, my thanks to the School of English, Sociology, Politics and Con-
temporary History and the Faculty of Arts, Media and Social Sciences at the
University of Salford for allowing me study leave in the period before taking
over as Dean so that I could work on this book. Special thanks here to Jackie
Flynn and Richard Towell for the space and advice in the ‘lead in’ and since.
This book seeks to understand ‘ordinary’ life. My own ordinary life
informs that understanding. Thanks go again to Mum and Dad for their inter-
est and support. Above all, most thanks go to Bernadette, James and Tim. I can
never put into words the extent of my debts and feelings to you all. But you
make the ordinary extraordinary in more ways than I can capture.
