Operating outside the sweet spots of our unique gifts also
works against our health and relationships with others.
Surprisingly, neutral behavior (for example, having a boss
who ignores you) is even more detrimental than working
for someone who focuses on your weaknesses. If your man-
ager ignores you, the chances of your being actively
disengaged on the job are 40 percent. This compares with
only a 22 percent rate of disengagement when the boss
focuses on weaknesses, and a mere 1 percent rate when
the focus is on strengths. 22
