Overview

This chapter will discuss how a rig might be selected. The different
types of rigs will be described, and an indication of their comparative
costs will be estimated, although the actual rate for a rig can vary widely
depending on the state of the industry and the price for oil. Major items of
rig equipment will then be discussed in sufficient detail that their function

within the rig operation and their operating principles can be understood.

Selecting a Suitable Drilling Rig

The classification of drilling rigs deals with the environment in which
the rigs have to function. Figure 5–1 illustrates the classifications of the

various available rigs.
