                                         1836 • British chemist Edmund Davy discovers acetylene.
                                         1838 • French chemist Pierre Joseph Pelletier discovers
                                             toluene.
                                         1839 • German-born French chemist Henri Victor Regnault
                                             first prepares carbon tetrachloride.
                                         1839 • German druggist Eduard Simon discovers styrene in
                                             petroleum.
                                         1845 • Swiss-German chemist Christian Friedrich Scho ¨nbein
                                             discovers cellulose nitrate.
                                         1846 • Americans Austin Church and John Dwight form a
                                             company to make and sell sodium bicarbonate. The pro-

                                             duct will become known as Arm & Hammer baking soda.
                                         Mid 1800s • Hydrogen peroxide is first used commercially—
                                             primarily to bleach hats.
