Chapter 2

                                            Strategic Aspects

In an environment where IT is a problem for companies, it
is important to understand how its restructuring entails
regaining control of data, starting with reference and master
data repositories. The MDM approach meets these demands.
We will elaborate on this response, from a strategic angle,
through what it brings to corporate governance and through
the transformation it brings to information systems.

                           2.1. Corporate governance

Why bother restructuring an IT system? Is the official
report of an IT burden on business enough to shake up the
entire company to make in-depth changes to the existing
systems? In most cases, this realization is not enough. Other
factors need to be taken into account if IT is to be changed.

The first factor is of technical origin. A company’s IT
systems might be obsolete. If the platform for execution is no
longer maintained, software must be migrated to a lasting
solution. This situation can lead a company to invest in a
technical migration of its software, with no added value to
                           the business.
