Chapter 17: Protecting the Spreadsheet 223
5. Type abracadabra in the Password to Modify text box and then select OK.
Excel displays the Confirm Password dialog box, where you must reenter the
opensesame password for opening the Solved17-1.xls workbook file.
6. Type opensesame in the Reenter Password to Proceed text box and then
select OK.
A second Confirm Password dialog box appears, where you must reenter the
abracadabra password for modifying the Solved17-1.xls workbook file.
7. Type abracadabra in the Reenter Password to Proceed text box and then
select OK.
Assuming that you were able to faithfully and exactly reproduce the open-
sesame password to open and abracadabra password to modify, Excel displays
no more Confirm Password dialog boxes, returning you to the Save As dialog
box.
8. Select the Save button to save Solved17-1.xls with the password to open and
password to modify the workbook.
9. Close the Solved17-1.xls workbook file (Ctrl+W) and then reopen the file by open-
ing the File pull-down menu and typing its number (1).
Excel displays a Password dialog box, informing you that the file is protected.
10. Type the password to open the file, opensesame, in the Password text box and
then select OK.
As soon as you select OK to close the first Password dialog box where you
entered the password to open the workbook file, a second one appears prompt-
ing you to enter the password for write access to the file. Note that if you are
unable to provide this password, Excel opens the workbook file in read-only
mode (so that changes to the file can only be saved in a copy of the file).
11. Type the password to modify, abracadabra, in the second Password text box and
then select OK.
As soon as you correctly enter the second password, Excel opens the
Solved17-1.xls workbook for editing or printing just as it would a nonprotected
workbook.
Go ahead and remove the password to modify the workbook as this kind of pro-
tection amounts to little more than saving the workbook file as a read-only file.
12. Choose File➪Save As and then open the Save Options dialog box by clicking the
Tools drop-down button and selecting General Options on its drop-down list.
To remove a password from a file, all you have to do is delete it from the
Password to Open or Password to Modify text box in the Save Options
dialog box.
13. Select all the masked characters in the Password to Modify text box and then
press the Delete key to remove them before you select OK.
14. Click the Save button in the Save As dialog box, and then click Yes to save the
Solved17-1.xls workbook without a write-access password.
15. Close the Solved17-1.xls workbook and then try reopening it again.
This time, you only need to reproduce the opensesame password to open the
workbook file.
16. Close the Solved17-1.xls workbook a last time without saving any further changes
to it.
