to meet the demands of a new position. This is not the method of
choice with Fearless Career Change! Of course, if you’re aimed at
a job that requires by law or by custom that you obtain a long-term
advanced degree like an associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, or doc-
torate, you may find it more helpful to skip to Chapter 7, where you
can begin setting goals for your new career.
For those of you who want to get on the
fast track, we’re going to hone in on the
strategies the majority of my clients have
found to be the most successful.
The eight fearless career change strategies (one or more of
which I’d like you to apply) are these:
1. Transferable talents
2. Strategic education
3. On-the-job training
4. Internship
5. Short-term education (90 days or less)
6. Volunteering
7. Just dive in!
8. Entrepreneurship
Strategy 1. Transferable Talents
A transferable talent, as we talked about in previous chapters, is an
ability or abilities that can be used in disparate fields. Just as “com-
munication” is a talent that can be used if you’re a shoe designer,
cashier, or biochemist, a transferable talent is something you can
take with you as you move from career to career.
As you will see in the following chapters, a wide range of trans-
ferable talents can be used to pave the way to your new career, even
if it is an entirely different field or occupation. For example,
Miguel used his transferable talent of being facile with numbers
when he went from being a mechanical engineer to a personal
