              Axial Splitting

                 The theory of  bent beams shows that variable curvature is accommodated by  shear
              stresses, which are a maximum on the central plane. In  fibres undergoing flex fatigue
              these shear stresses can cause failure by axial splitting, Fig. lOf,g.
