17-14 MANAGEMENT OF GLOBAL PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS
FIGURE 17.5 Connectivity map module.
Access to the project workplace is based on the individual’s role and responsibili-
ties. The project uses the organization’s common profile under the organizational
directory database to provide single sign-on and a unique look and feel for navigation.
The project manager needs to monitor the integrity of the map routinely under busi-
ness control and security audit guidelines. The project member’s user identification
and user profile registered under the organizational directory system will be used for
access control. There may be different security levels for access restrictions to the pro-
prietary information in the information repositories. The project manager needs to
audit the connectivity map routinely to ensure integrity of project center and project
workplace. Access to the knowledge portal and collaboration framework will be orga-
nization’s responsibility. Figure 17.5 displays a sample connectivity map.
BENEFITS
Physical separation and timing delay can easily trigger the chain reactions of miscom-
munication and result in loss of team consensus and project focus. By adopting the
collaborative knowledge framework, a project manager will be able to connect the
project knowledge portal, project center, and project workplace by the connectivity
map through the collaboration platform during project initiation to establish a project
management system. Throughout project execution, a project manager can further
refine processes to adjust the course of actions for performance, throughput, and pro-
ductivity improvement. As a result, the project management system improves the
effectiveness of the project management function, and it also gives the project
manager more time to understand the business, market, and technology trends.
