THE CONTRACTOR’S ROLE IN INTEGRATED DESIGN 65
PLATINUM PROJECT PROFILE
Betty Irene Moore Natural Sciences Center, Oakland, California
The 26,000-square-feet Betty Irene Moore Natural Sciences Center at Mills
College houses classrooms, laboratories, and research facilities. The total building
cost was more than $17 million and the project was completed in July 2007.
Designed to be 43 percent more energy efficient than California Title 24 require-
ments, the building is also 89 percent more energy efficient than a typical aca-
demic lab in the San Francisco Bay Area. A rooftop mounted 30-kW photovoltaic
system is expected to produce over 46,000-kWh of electricity annually. The rain-
water collection system will contribute to a 61 percent reduction in water use. The
building design incorporates daylighting, operable windows, radiant slab heating,
displacement ventilation, and evaporative cooling.*
