Chapter 9 — Creating Art with Roomba 185
The Result
Figure 9-15 is an example of the basic kinds of geometric art possible with Roomba and
RoombaSpiro. It is a single color using a single set of parameters that stay constant. The
marker was held in place by the ruler clamp and positioned in the space where the dirt bin
would be. That configuration seems to give the most consistent and accurate results.
FIGURE 9-15: Drawing made with RoombaSpiro
Figure 9-16 shows the Roomba at work on a more complex piece that not only had two different
colored markers but also had parameters that were being manipulated in real time. Figure 9-17
shows the result.
By letting Roomba operate for several minutes, dense, complex works can be created. The nat-
ural slippage of the wheels and pens guarantee that no two works will be the same.
Figure 9-18 shows a simpler work demonstrating some of these interesting slipping effects. It’s
done with two pens, one held by the wedge clamp and one taped. The outer taped one was
purposefully allowed to be a little loose.
