116 Chapter 4 A critical review on using blockchain technology in education domain
• This concept can be used to localize transactions in insti-
tutions belonging to a university and then update the
same to the university BC.
• Establish validated offchain channels between professors
and students for a course evaluation through assignments,
tests, and tutorials. Pen/paper exams or e-exam results can
be recorded and evaluated using smart contracts. The final
grade is then written to university BC on course
completion.
• Course registration can be done offchain between students,
courses, and professors. Once confirmed, the schedule of
the student can be updated in the university BC.
• Certificate/transcript verifications can be done using the
secondary chain between the student and professor/veri-
fier and agency. Once the certificate/grades are finalized,
decisions can be written to the primary BC.
• Suggest personalized learning for students by establishing
channels between student profiles and course profiles.
Once schedule is verified and finalized, it can be written
to the primary BC.
• Graduation of a student can be automated using an off-
chain for verification of student transcripts in various
semesters. It verifies the transcripts of students in various
semesters, certifications undertaken, etc. Once confirmed,
it can be updated in primary BC for graduation. The certif-
icate can be printed, signed, and dispatched.
• For faculty, promotion can be managed by updating the
individual’s records including his publications, projects
awarded, consultancy performed, degrees, and training
attended. As verification is done by BC on initial updation,
these details can be used by the employer for checking
eligibility using smart contracts.
• Credit transfers from industrial one credit courses, MOOCs
to his degree program can be done by looking into the
student transcripts/certificates in his digital wallet and
writing smart contracts to update the credits in his degree
program. Credit transfers between multiple colleges are
also possible by writing suitable smart contracts for verifi-
cation of course/syllabus constraints. This offers the
student more choice of courses.
• All the student certifications, degrees earned, and recogni-
tions are maintained in his digital wallet. With suitable
access permissions, employers can access this wallet and
check for the credibility of the student, and University no
longer needs to act as an intermediary.
