(now Consultant) but he has enjoyed a varied career in applied geology. His first degree was taken
at the University of Wales and he obtained his doctorate from Leeds University. Much of his early
career was spent in base metal exploration and underground mining in East Africa and this cul-
minated with a spell as Chief Geologist at Kilembe Mines. Latterly he has been concerned with
all aspects of Tarmac’s work in the field of industrial minerals.
TIMOTHY BELL Bell Hanson, Foss Road, Bingham NG11 7EP. Graduated from West London Col-
lege with a first class degree (cum laude) in Geology and Geography before obtaining an MSc degree
with distinction in Mineral Exploration and Mining Geology at Leicester University in 1989. He
joined CP Holdings (opencast coal contractors) as geologist in charge of computer applications in
the mining division before moving to SURPAC Software International where he was Technical
Manager in their Nottingham office and is now running his own business.

Senior Lecturer in charge of the MSc Course in Mining Geology and Mineral Exploration and
the BSc Course in Applied Geology at Leicester University. A graduate of Liverpool University in
Physics and Geology he obtained a PhD at Queen’s University, Ontario and worked in Canada for
the Ontario Department of Mines spending much time investigating uranium and other mineral-
isation. In Europe he has carried out research on many aspects of mineralisation and industrial
mineralogy and is the editor and author of a number of books and papers in these fields. For a
number of years he was Vice-President of the International Society for Geology Applied to Mineral
                 Deposits.

6BT. Senior Lecturer in Exploration Geophysics at University College. He graduated in Physics
from Oxford University in 1961 and gained the Diploma of Imperial College in Applied Geophysics
the following year. He joined the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources as a geophysicist
and worked in the airborne, engineering, and regional gravity sections. He obtained a PhD from
Imperial College for his research on the geophysics of eastern Papua and joined the staff there
in 1971. Then came a spell as Chief Geophysicist for Barringer Research in Australia followed by
one as an independent consultant when his clients included the UNDP, the Dutch Overseas Aid
