take his PhD in Applied Geochemistry. He has had wide experience in the fields of mineral deposit
assessment and exploration all over the globe. He has worked for Consolidated Gold Fields search-
ing for tin deposits in Cornwall, the South African Geological Survey, Esso Minerals Africa
Inc., with whom he was involved in the discovery of three uranium deposits. Besides his general
expertise in mineral exploration he has developed the use of raster and vector based GIS systems
and courses in these techniques, particularly in ArcGIS for exploration integration. His present
position is that of Senior Lecturer in Mineral Exploration at the University of Leicester.
BARRY C. SCOTT Knoyle House, Vicarage Way, Gerrards Cross, Bucks SL9 8AS. His most recent
position was Lecturer in Mining Geology and Mineral Exploration at Leicester University from
which he retired in 1993. Previously he had occupied senior positions with a number of mining
companies and academic institutions. These included Borax Consolidated Ltd, Noranda Mines
Ltd, G. Wimpey plc, the Royal School of Mines, and Imperial College. Dr Scott obtained his BSc
and PhD from Imperial College and his MSc from Queen’s University, Ontario. He was a Member
of Council of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy for many years, was its President and
Treasurer.
MICHAEL K.G. WHATELEY Rio Tinto Technical Services, Principal Consultant-Manager. He
graduated in Geology and Geography from London University in 1968, gained an MSc from the
University of the Witwatersrand in 1980 and a PhD from Leicester University in 1994 for his work
on the computer modeling of the Leicestershire Coalfield. He worked in diamond exploration in
Botswana and on gold mines near Johannesburg before joining Hunting Geology and Geophysics in
South Africa. He then joined Utah International Inc. in charge of their Fuel Division in southern
Africa. In 1982 he returned to the UK to work for Golder Associates before taking up a post at the
University of Leicester as Lecturer in Mining Geology. Since 1996 he has been a consultant with
Rio Tinto Technical Services based in Bristol.
