76 It’s Not a Glass Ceiling, It’s a Sticky Floor
____ Appear to lack self-confidence because you’re always
working so hard?
____ Seem overly critical of others or hard on your team?
____ Can seem defensive and hurt in the face of constructive
criticism?
____ Are a micro-manager?
____ Seem too risk-averse, or too reluctant to try new things or
raise your visibility?
____ Don’t seem responsive to others’ priorities or sense of
urgency on certain projects?
If you checked off any of these critiques then you have to ask
yourself, what impact are you having on your organization and is it
productive or useful for others? Is your perfectionism keeping you
from focusing on the right things?
Solutions for the Perfectionist
If perfection, or micromanaging, is your sticky floor, you probably
need to work on letting go.
Think in terms of perfecting your ability to bring out the best in
your team and get the job done through them (instead of in spite of
them, which might be how you often feel). Learn to let them do
things on their own. And work on accepting that while others will
never do things quite the same way you would, they can still do per-
fectly fine work. Remember the concept of “good enough” and apply
it whenever you can!
