PREFACE

Just Promoted! was first published in 1992. The book was coauthored by Ed
Betof and Fredric Harwood, and it has remained on the market for over 18
years. It has been used by thousands of professionals and leaders who were
preparing for, or in the midst of, their own transition into new leadership roles.
Human resources professionals and executive coaches have also made exten-
sive use of the book as a resource in their work with transitioning leaders. We
have been delighted to hear of the many examples of more senior executives
using the book both for themselves and as a coaching aid as they helped those
on their respective teams who were assuming new and greater leadership
        responsibilities.
This second edition of Just Promoted! builds on the principles of the ear-
lier edition. However, much has changed in our world and the world of work
since the early 1990s when Just Promoted! first became available. The updated
material in this book addresses the many challenges of contemporary leader-
ship and leadership transitions. The best ideas and activities from the first edi-
tion remain. However, there are many new elements in this edition. Almost
20 years of field-tested ideas and concepts developed since Just Promoted! was
originally published are presented. These experiences were gained in many
business, school, government, and not-for profit work settings. They have been
taught in seminars and used extensively in coaching newly appointed and pro-
        moted leaders.
A major feature in this edition is the inclusion of a suite of Just Promoted
Leader Tools that are presented throughout the book. These tools and the con-
cepts they support really work. They are practical and have been used in many
work settings and countries across the globe. These tools and concepts make
leadership transitions a bit easier and greatly reduce the risk of career derail-
ment during the 12 to 18 months when a newly promoted leader is tremen-
dously challenged and very often working at a frenzied pace. With the help of
past and current colleagues, we have personally enhanced our own ability to
step into new leadership roles. We have also taught, consulted, and coached
