Elements of Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence competencies include selected soft skills: the self-aware-
ness, values, and attitudes and orientation for positive outcomes needed for
effective performance. You will need to determine which of these will be
needed for the roles you must fill. Examples of the soft skills you may require
include the following:

■ Empathy
■ Emotional expression
■ Interpersonal effectiveness
■ Healthy trust practices such as tending to trust people until there is a
specific reason not to
■ Intuition
■ Intentionality as it is related to initiative
Does the job require a self-starter who likes working on his or her own, or
someone who prefers collaboration, teamwork, and communication?
Motivation
■ Does the job require a highly motivated professional, or can the job be
adequately performed by a less directed employee?
■ What are the requirements for teamwork, cooperativeness, and the abil-
ity to work with others?
