New Leader and Team Assimilation
Process (NLTAP)
Overview
Objective To help the new leader (newly hired, appointed, or promoted) to
rapidly develop a strong positive relationship with his or her team. The
process promotes immediate open two-way communications between
the leader and the team. The process is appropriate for highly or less
experienced leaders.
Participants Usually the entire staff including the administrative assistant.
May also include an extended staff where the larger team is key to
success.
Where Typically conducted on site (in a conference room) or in a hotel
meeting room.
When Normally conducted sometime between the first and fourth weeks
after the leader has taken responsibility for the staff, work group, or
department.
How long Approximately three to three and a half hours for the staff and
four to five hours for the leader including the preparation and the
debriefing meeting.
Facilitator A member of the human resources (HR) staff or an external OD
facilitator.
Background of process The process was developed by a GE human
resources team in the early 1970s. Since then, thousands of newly
appointed managers and leaders from presidents to first-level supervi-
sors have utilized the process.
Benefits Provides the leader with an opportunity to hear firsthand the ini-
tial questions, issues, and concerns that exist in people’s minds. Also pro-
vides the leader with an opportunity to talk about himself and his
business philosophy and to share his expectations for the organization.
Many leaders have used the process again and again as they progress in
the organization. Also, associates say the program makes them feel more
appreciated and valued.
