ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

and Leadership at Colorado College and the President Emeritus of
Whitman College (1993–2005). Earl Walker is a professor of management
and leadership at The Citadel, and founding dean of the School of Busi-
ness Administration. He retired as an Army colonel in 1993 after 26 years
of service and 18 years of teaching leadership courses at the U.S. Military
Academy at West Point. Earl has authored innumerable books, articles, and
papers on leadership over his long career of action and reflection. I am
deeply indebted to Tom and Earl for their help and guidance.
My friends Raymond Arroyo, Tom Carr, and Pablo Schneider each
read the manuscript and provided helpful comments and editorial assis-
tance. Many former White House Fellows also read and critiqued various
drafts of the manuscript, and the book is infinitely better as a result. Many
thanks to Karen Galatz, Nancy Kelley, Mitchell Reiss, John Shephard,
             Diane Yu, and Kinney Zalesne.
I want to express my deepest thanks to Ivy Latimer, a former execu-
tive of McGraw-Hill and a member of the PRIMER network of Latino
business leaders, who introduced me to my publisher. To my editor, Knox
Houston, and my attorney, Ken Browning, who both supported me with
expert guidance and superb counsel throughout this process, I send my
kindest regards and sincere thanks. And as always, I am eternally grateful
for the support of my longtime business partner, Camilo Salomon, who is
one of the smartest, hardest-working, and most honest men I know. Many
thanks also to our new partners—Martin Cabrera, Robert Aguilar, and
Robert Libertini—thank you for your belief in us.
I also want to acknowledge the encouragement I’ve received from all my
close friends at PRIMER, The Executive Committee (TEC, now Vistage),
and the Young Presidents Organization (YPO)—especially from my forum
members—and from all the exceptional friends I’ve made through my serv-
ice to the U.S. Air Force Academy, Aetna, and the board of directors of
             Winn Dixie Stores.
To all those who have offered to fan out across the country and help
promote this book and its leadership lessons—Myrna Blyth, Carolyn Chin,
Clay Christensen, Shelby Coffey, Cesar Conde, Bill Drummond, Jami
Floyd, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Sanjay Gupta, Jeff Hall, Walt Humann,
Tom Johnson, Matt Miller, James Muller, David Neuman, Roger Porter,
Sharon Richie Melvan, Rick Stamberger, Susan Stautberg, Diane Yu, and
Kinney Zalesne—I thank you for applying your energy and dedication to
